Brymo was born Olawale Ashimi on the 9th of May, 1986 in Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos. He was raised in his birthplace, Okokomaiko, Ojo, in Lagos State, Nigeria. Born as the only child of his parents, his father was a carpenter, and his mother, a petty trader. After enrolling in an Islamic School, he was able to quote the Qur’an as he grew older.

He schooled at the Aganju Aka Primary School, and later went to school at Japual Primary School. Initially, Brymo wanted to become a footballer after his secondary school. He was a troublesome kid who fought with other neighborhood kids, and got his first song recorded in 1999.

The song was titled Future, and he was still in secondary school at this time. In 2002, he founded a group known as The Aliens with some of his friends. The group survived 3 years, and starved in 2005. One of his biggest influences in music remains his mother who inspired him to start making music as she sang Fuji songs.

After a while, he was given admission to study Zoology at the University of Lagos. He survived the first year in school, but left the school in the second year to focus on his musical career.

Debut Album: Brymstone

In 2007, Brymo released his second album titled Brymstone. According to what he told Damiete Braide of The Sun, he picked R&B as a result of being influenced by Backstreet Boys, and R. Kelly. Within 6 months, over 2,000 copies of the album was sold.

Second Album: TheSonofaKapenta

Brymo released his second album titled TheSonofaKapenta on the 23rd of November, 2011 featuring Jesse Jagz, M.I., Ice Prince, and Pryse. The song had two versions: English and Yoruba, and it’s lead single was titled Ara, released on the 18th of September 2011. On the 31st of December, 2015, the music video for Ara was released; shot and directed by Aje Films.

In a chat with Damiete Braide of The Sun, he unveiled that Ara happens to be a slang that translates to mean Wonder. In July 2012, he also said, in an interview with Adeola Adeyemo of BellaNaija, that the song was released because he was pressurized by Chocolate City to release a single.

He released the second single to the studio album, titled Good Morning, on the 16th of April, 2016. The music video for the single was released on the 30th of July, 2012, and directed by Aje Films. The song is about the life of Brymo, and was inspired by his father’s occupation as a carpenter.

Third Album: Merchants, Dealers & Slaves

On the 20th of October 2013, Brymo released his third album titled Merchants, Dealers & Slaves. The album’s lead single was titled Down, and released on the 1st of October 2013.

On the 26th of March, 2014, hard copies of the album was released, and the album featured guest appearance from David. On the 30th of September 2013, the music video for down was uploaded to YouTube.

Fourth Album: Tabula Rasa

To move on with his musical career after the big exit from Chocolate City, he produced his fourth album titled Tabula Rasa on the 30th of October 2014. The album was nicknamed after a judge’s speech at the court in Lagos, and the lead single for the album was titled Fe Mi, released on the 18th of September, 2014.

On the 30th of March, 2015, he released the music video of his single titled Ję Lé O Sinmi, which was directed by Godson KC Uma of MaadKreativity Inc.

Compilation Album: Trance

Trance is Brymo’s compilation album produced on the 8th of December, 2015. The compilation album had 8 tracks, and was produced basically for US based fans.

The 8-track album was produced by a record firm based in the US, Tate Music Group. It’s more of a medley, and has a mix of Pop, Afrobeat, Soul Music, and African Folk Music.

Fifth Album: Klitôris

Prior to the release of his fifth album titled Klitoris, he made available on iTunes for pre-order. It was released on the 9th of May, 2016 and had 11 tracks, with its lead single to be Happy Memories. Georgi Georgiev of Moonring Art Design covered the artwork of the album.

The original artwork of the album was not accepted by iTunes, and this led to it being edited by Duks. The album, according to Brymo, is an expression of love and its uncertainty. The title, Klitôris, means Key in Greek.

Sixth Album: Osó

His sixth studio album titled Osó was released on the 27th of March 2018, and it had 11 tracks. Before the release of this album, he had released a Jazz/Afrobeat single titled Do You Know Me. A day after the release of his album, Osó, he released the music video of one of his singles titled Heya which was filmed and directed by NVMB3R Production.

Exit from Chocolate City

In May 2013, Brymo stated through his handle on Twitter that he had left his record label, Chocolate City. In a press conference in Lekki organized at the office of Chocolate City, the then CEO of the music label, Audu Maikori, didn’t agree with his claims.

The CEO made it clear that Brymo had 2 more albums to release and had three years more with the label according to their signed agreement. In June 2013, Brymo said the label gave no solid explanation as to how his second album was leaked, and he has no full detail about his album sales, promotion and distribution.

In August 2013, Brymo signed a distribution deal with online sharing platform Spinlet. The deal was terminated after his record label Chocolate City informed Spinlet of their contract with Brymo. On the 14th of October 2013, an interim injunction against Brymo by his label Chocolate City.

This prohibited him from engaging in any other musical ventures without the permission of label, and outside the terms of his contract with the label. Six days after the interim injunction was filed against him, he released his third studio album.

On the 21st of October 2013, a Lagos State Federal High Court judge placed a restrain on Brymo from music promotion, and distribution following the lawsuit by his label. In October, the representatives at Chocolate City, and Brymo’s management met in a meeting to resolve to pending issues.

In the meeting, the record label asked that Brymo endorsed an agreement by signing, but he refused. On the 11th of November 2013, the legal arms of Brymo’s management, and the Chocolate City representatives met assembled for a hearing in court, but the case was adjourned to 5th December, 2013.

In March 2014, the restrain on Brymo was lifted off him, and the lawyer presiding over the case pulled out in May 2014 after being accused of exhibiting bias.

Books

Aside being an awesome singer, he’s an author and his first book would be Oriri’s Plight. The book is basically about a Nubian man in the early times who struggles against all mystical odds to become the crown king of Uzi Kingdom.

On the 22nd of September, 2018, the digital format of the book was released and made available on all digital book stores.

On the 4th of October, 2018, the printed format of Oriri’s Plight was published and released by Clockwyce Publishing, a publishing agency owned by Brymo.

Features in Oleku (Ice Prince) & Love You (Jesse Jagz)

Popular Nigerian rapper and singer Ice Prince featured Brymo on his hit track titled Oleku, which was the lead single of his album, Everybody Loves Ice Prince (produced in 2011).

The song didn’t generate so much money for Brymo, but it got him a lot of exposure and fame. Later on, he was approached by Denrele Edun who informed him that award winning rapper M.I. wanted to meet and talk with him.

In 2010, after meeting M.I. he signed a record deal with Chocolate City record label. Before he signed the deal, he had worked with M.I.’s younger brother, Jesse Jagz on the song titled Love You. Love You went on to be a track in Jesse Jagz’s album, Jag of All Tradez, released in 2011.
